Postcard of the Month: November 2026
/The George and Dragon, Houghton
The George and Dragon features on this White & Son postcard from their early series, probably photographed in 1901 or 1902. The person in the road may be White’s son. Standing by the front door is possibly the landlord and presumably another member of staff is peering over the side gate.
The card was posted in Arundel in 1912 to master Fred Read from his dad, with the comment that “you must not lean against the building or it might fall over”. Clearly this was not the case as it is still very much there more than a hundred years later!
The pub is featured in our Houghton video on this website, and often appears on postcards. It was also painted in the early 1900s by Jose Weiss, artist and aviation pioneer, also referenced in the video.
