Tales from the Arun: 1. How it all began

A book from 1868 describing a journey from the Thames to the Solent became the subject of a video documentary. This led to me collecting old postcards to expand my knowledge of the subsequent history of the river Arun.

Tales from the Arun: 2. Littlehampton

With this presentation I begin my stories of the postcard subjects shown, sometimes enhanced by the words of the writers. The focus is on the early years of the 1900s, something of a ‘Golden Age’.

Tales from the Arun: 3. Ford

This episode explains the impact of the railway on the Arun Navigation, exemplified by the complex river crossing at the time.

Tales from the Arun: 4. Arundel

In this presentation I look at the last years of the town as an inland port and the subsequent growth of the river for leisure use.

Tales from the Arun: 5. The Black Rabbit

A popular landmark along the route, The Black Rabbit Inn demonstrates the transition from industry to leisure. The Black Rabbit also features in our Burpham video.

Tales from the Arun: 6. Black Rabbit to Houghton

In this episode I look at sites around the Houghton Bridge, another landmark on the river, showing the transition from industry to leisure. Houghton Bridge also features in our Houghton video.

Tales from the Arun: 7. Bury to Pallingham and Beyond

In my final presentation, I talk about the last ferry on the river and further signs of traffic decline. Other topics include the consequences of the Hardham link closure, leisure boating around Pulborough, Pallingham Lock. and the Wey & Arun Canal. More is revealed in our Bury and Pulborough videos.
